DIET
Emperor penguins eat a variety of different things. One thing they eat is krill. Krill is a small prawn like plant that is found all over Antarctica. They are about 4 centimetres long. Most animals in Antarctica rely on krill as part of their diet including the Emperor penguin.
All penguins eat small fish, some more than others. Emperor penguins eat quite a lot of fish. They eat one of the largest amounts of fish that a penguin eats each day.
Emperor penguins also eat squid .They eat young squid and smaller types of squid including the arrow and the greater hooked. Emperor, rockhopper and others penguins eat squid as they become seasonally available.
Emperor penguins also eat crustaceans. This picture shows what they look like. They are a prawn like animal that have claws just like a lobster.
Emperor penguins are close to the southern oceans food chain. An adult Emperor penguin usually eats 2-3 kg of food each day. They eat lots of food to fatten up before the moult [ when their feathers shed] or before the breeding season starts, so they are able to eat more than this during these times.
